The message that started it
This whole project started the best way possible — a customer reached out with a problem and a vision. He wanted a clean backup camera solution that didn’t look like an afterthought. No universal bracket. No “stuck-on” look. Something that felt OEM+ and belonged on the car.
That’s exactly the kind of challenge we love at PLUGNPLAYCUSTOMS. If the part doesn’t exist, we build it.
Step 1: 3D scanning the OEM shark fin
The key to a clean fit is always the same: start with real geometry. We 3D scanned the OEM shark fin so we could design around the exact contours, mounting surfaces, and clearances.
Step 2: Designing it in CAD
Once the scan was captured, we moved into CAD to design a mount that integrates with the OEM fin shape while holding the camera securely. Cable routing was part of the plan from day one — we wanted it clean and serviceable.
Step 3: Multiple versions, real test-fitting
The first version is never the final version — and that’s the point. We iterated through multiple revisions, test-fitting each version and refining:
- camera placement and viewing angle
- how tight/secure the fit feels in the fin
- cable path and strain relief
- how “factory” it looks once installed
After several rounds, we landed on the version that matched what the customer imagined — the clean, intentional look he wanted from the start.
Step 4: Final finish and “real product” readiness
Once fitment and function were locked in, we focused on making it a real product: consistent build quality, clean finish, and an install approach that makes sense for owners.
From one-off to a product we now offer
The best part? The customer’s idea didn’t stay a one-off. We turned it into something we can now offer to others with the same goal: a clean roof-mounted camera solution that looks OEM+.

Camera & connection (what most people ask)
The mount is the physical solution — how you view the camera depends on your setup. For the easiest install and best experience, we designed this around WOLFBOX-style mirror dash cam systems.
If you want video on the factory iDrive screen, you’ll typically need an aftermarket video interface/retrofit module. If you’re unsure, send us your year/model and what screen/system you’re using.
How to buy it
We offer it in simple options so you can choose what fits your setup:
- Fin Only — for customers supplying their own compatible camera/system
- Fin + Camera — bundled with a compatible camera
- Complete Kit — fin + camera + mirror dash cam setup
